LCStatus

Scientific Name: Vanellus miles

Range: Australia

Masked marvel? The reason for this bird’s yellow wattle is purely for looks; the male’s larger wattle may attract a mate. This Australian bird is so busy searching for ground insects, seeds or crustaceans that it rarely sleeps.

The lapwing has long, sharp spurs on its wings for defense. Adults will dive at intruders or pretend to have a broken wing to lure danger away from its nest.
