LCStatus

Scientific Name: Myotis velifer

Bats may fly, but they are not birds. Bats are mammals and, like humans, have hair and tend to give birth to only one offspring at a time. Did you know that a bat can catch flying insects with its mouth, wings, and event with its tail? This allows bats to catch a lot of bugs—controlling insects that attack crops. Not to mention helping out humans—bats can eat up to 1,200 annoying mosquitos every hour!

Did you know the insectivorous bat is native to Oklahoma? This exhibit features a short-tailed fruit bat (Carollia perspicillata)
