Lungfish

Scientific Name: Protopterus annectens

Range: Western and Southern Africa

Habitat: Wetlands

Food: Frogs, fish, mollusks, tree roots, seeds

In addition to gills, the African lungfish has two lungs which allow it to extract oxygen from air. When water dries up, it digs into the mud and surrounds itself with a secretion that will allow it to survive out of water for up to four years.
